What treatments are available for alcohol addiction?

Receiving a DWI in North Carolina is a serious matter with very serious consequences. Additionally, a DWI charge can also point to a problem with alcohol use in general, and these effects often extend beyond the legal. Interpersonal relationships, work, and even health in general will all be impacted by prolonged acohol usage. WebMD explains the different treatments available for alcohol addiction and how each one may potentially help you on the road to recovery.

Inpatient/outpatient programs

An inpatient rehab program allows patients to stay within a controlled environment with other people overcoming addictions. Here patients have access to counselors and medical professionals, as well as medically-assisted detox (which is needed for particularly severe addictions). Outpatient rehab is also available, which allows the person seeking recovery stay within his or her own home while receiving treatment.

Behavior Therapy

Some people use alcohol to treat an underlying emotional or mental health condition. Behavior therapy is helpful in this case, as it treats the root cause of alcohol addiction. Therapists allow a person to set goals for recovery while also providing healthier coping mechanisms. Along with therapy, medications to manage cravings or make the inebriating effects of alcohol less pleasurable can be used in conjunction.

Support groups

Having a strong social network is another component of recovery. This is where support groups come in; organizations like Alcoholics Anonymous allow people to forge bonds with others going through the same experiences. Support groups are also good in the event of a relapse. Other members can help a person get back on track at a much faster rate than trying to go it alone.
